The Goldwater Scholarship, a federally funded program, is the pre-eminent nationally competitive fellowship for undergraduate students in science, math, and engineering. Applicants must rank in the top quartile of their class while also demonstrating outstanding research skills and potential for advanced study in their fields as well as a strong commitment to pursuing research-oriented careers. The average GPA of Goldwater Scholars is about 3.8/4.0 and most scholars go on to obtain doctorate degrees.

Each year, 10-20 sophomores and juniors compete for the four UR nominations to the national Goldwater competition by submitting a draft of the scholarship application, which includes a research essay, along with recommendation letters and transcripts. A faculty committee reviews the applications and selects the nominees. Since 2002, 15 UR students have been named Goldwater Scholars. The scholarship is worth up to $7500. Sophomore winners receive funding for two years, while junior winners receive funding for their senior year. 317 Goldwater Scholars were selected this year out of a pool of over 1100 candidates.
