Freshman Robert Penna (UR Physics major class of 2007) awarded the Schlumberger Scholarship
Freshman Robert Penna UR Physics major (BS), class of 2007, was awarded the Schlumberger Scholarship, $1,000/yr, renewable for the next three years from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Foundation. http://www.seg.org/business/foundation/scholarships/index.shtml
Penna has been working with Professor Kevin McFarland and Professor Alice Quillen on the PARTICLE progam cosmic rays and space physics. PARTICLE is a summer and academic year program for high school teachers and students. See: http://www.pas.rochester.edu/particle

As part of his work, Penna has been working with a group of high school teachers and students to interpret their data showing dramatic decreases in cosmic ray rates correlated with solar activity, phenomena known as Forbush minima.
