Laura Schmidt (PAS '03) and Elizabeth Strychalski (PAS '02) to be Awarded the Catherine Block and Janet Howell Clark Prizes in 2002
Laura Schmidt (PAS Undergraduate Class of 03) will be awarded The 2002 Catherine Block Memorial Fund Prize at commencement on May 18-19, 2002.
The Catherine Block Memorial Fund Prize is an annual prize awarded by the University to a woman in the junior class in recognition of her outstanding ability and achievement in the field of science. The selection of the award recipient is based on recommendations by the respective departments, which are evaluated by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College.
Laura Schmidt has a broad range of interests and, in addition to her studies in physics, she has taken advanced courses in chemical engineering, fluid dynamics, chemistry and mathematics. Laura has been active in research at the University as well, having already worked with Professor David Wu in Chemical Engineering and with both Professors Robert Knox and Lawrence Helfer in Physics and Astronomy, work that has resulted in refereed publication. In addition, Laura has served as a Teaching Intern in Physics and a Teaching Assistant in Mathematics.
Elizabeth Strychalski (PAS Undergraduate Class of 02) will be awarded The 2002 Janet Howell Clark Prize at commencement on May 18-19, 2002.
The Janet Howell Clark Prize is an annual prize awarded by the University to the senior woman who has shown the greatest promise in creative work in either astronomy, biology, chemistry, or physics and who has shown outstanding versatility in the mastery of allied fields. Selection is based on recommendations by the respective departments, which are evaluated by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College.
Elizabeth has been active in many aspects of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. She has been involved in research projects at FermiLab working with Professor Paul Tipton and in experimental quantum optics working with Professor Nicholas Bigelow. She has been active in teaching, serving as a Departmental Teaching Intern and as a math tutor. Elizabeth also spent a summer abroad working in Peru. Elizabeth is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the Order of Omega and is a Bausch and Lomb Scholar. She is a member of the Golden Key National honor Society and is a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
