McFarland Recommended to Receive NSF CAREER Award in 2002

We have been notified that on April 1, 2002, the Physics Division/Directorate of the National Science Foundation has accepted the recommendation of the program officer to award an NSF CAREER Grant to Professor Kevin McFarland.

Professor McFarland's proposal for a Faculty Early Development ( CAREER) grant from the National Science Foundation is titled "Precision Measurements of the Top Quark and Cosmic Ray Telescopes for the Classroom". The recommdation is for a total of $305,000 for a period 5 years starting April 15, 2002. Official notification of the award to the University of Rochester is expected before the first week in May of 2002.

This would be the fourth prestigious award for McFarland, who has received a Sloand Foundation Fellowship, a Department of Energy (DOE) Outstanding Junior Investigator Awad (OJI), and Cottrell Scholar Award from the Research Corporation.

It is interesting to note that the three most recently hired members of the department's high energy physics group ( McFarland, Orr , and Tipton ) have all been awarded both the NSF CAREER Award and the DOE Outstanding Junior Investigator Award.

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a National Science Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation*s most prestigious awards for new faculty members. The CAREER program recognizes and supports the early career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. CAREER awardees will be selected on the basis of creative, career-development plans that effectively integrate research and education within the context of the mission of their institution. Such plans should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of integrated contributions to research and education.
