U.K. Yang (UR PhD 2001) Wins Honorable Mention in "Outstanding Young Researcher Award" of the American Korean Physics Association

Dr. Un Ki Yang, who received his Ph.D. in experimental high energy physics from UR in 2001 (advisor A. Bodek), won Honorable Mention by the committee to select the Outstanding Young Researcher Award (ORYA) of the AKPA (American Korean Physics association) in 2001. The award is described below.

The Association of Korean Physicists in America proudly presents this citation of Honorable Mention for the year 2001 Outstanding Young Researcher Award to Dr. Un-Ki Yang of the University of Chicago, for his truly outstanding scholarly and pioneering research on the high energy physics.

Final selection of our " Outstanding Young Researcher Award of the Year 2001" has been finalized thanks to the dilligent work of the OYRA Selection Committee members, Drs. S. K. Lyo, S.W. Cheong, T. Bai, K.J. Kim, and chaired by Dr. Y. K. Yeo. It is our great pleasure to announce that Dr. Taekjip Ha at the University of Illinois is slected for the 2001 OYRA Award for his outstanding research accomplishment on the " Biological Physics in the Field of Single Molecule Fluorescence." Once again I would like to congratulate Dr. Ha on behalf of the AKPA for his selection to the OYRA Award. The Award ceremony is to take place at the AKPA annual traditional APS March dinner meeting to be held on March 14, 2001 at 6.30PM, at Shilla Restaurant, Seattle, Washington (see announcement by Dr. Han and Dr. Yeo for the dinner meeting). Recipient of the OYRA Award will be honored with a Citation Plaque and $1000 cash. At the same time, we would also like to honor three other recipients as "Honrable Mention for the year 2001 OYRA". Those "Honorable Mention" recipients are Drs. H. W. Jeong, Univ. Notre Dame, I.S. Song at UCLA, and U.K. Yang at Univ. Chicago. Each of these recipients will receive $100 cash along with a citation.

INVITATION TO NOMINATE THE 2001 AKPA OUTSTANDING YOUNG RESEARCHER AWARD (OYRA) PURPOSE: To recognize and promote excellence in research by outstanding young ethnic Korean physicists in North America who are working at research universities or institutions, and industrial or government laboratories in North America. Seven OYRA have been awarded in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

QUALIFICATION and NOMINATION: Candidates are limited to those who received their doctoral degree after January 1, 1996, and are to be nominated by the Chair or Head of the Department where they are employed or by the candidate°Øs former thesis advisor in a letter detailing the importance and impact of the candidate°Øs work. Supporting documents should include the candidate°Øs curriculum vitae with representative publications and three letters of recommendation. DEADLINE: December 20, 2000 for nominations and January 15, 2001 for supporting documents. The awardee will be selected by the Awards Committee, consisting of: Prof. Cheung Ryong Ji (North Carolina State University) Dr. Sungkwun Lyo (Sandia National Laboratories) Dr. Sang-Wook Cheong (Bell Laboratories) Prof. Yung Kee Yeo, Chair (Air Force Institute of Technology) Dr. Taeil Bai (Stanford University) Prof. Kwang-Je Kim (Argonne National Lab/University of Chicago)

PRESENTATION: The award of $1,000 with plaque will be presented during the AKPA annual meeting at the American Physical Society Meeting, Wednesday Evening Dinner, March 14, 2001.
