Professor Eberly to Receive the Goergen Award for Distinguished Achievement and Artistry in Undergraduate Education.
Professor Joseph Eberly is a recepient of a Goergen Award for Distinguished Achievement and Artistry in Undergraduate Education this year. Professor Eberly was nominated by the department for the Georgen Award in recognition of his contributions in the introduction of Quantum Physics to Freshmen students (i.e. PHY137 and PHY143). In addition, Professor Eberly has supervised a number of REU students on research projects relating to quantum physics, many of which have resulted in journal publications.
The Goergen Awards will be presented at the College-wide Convocation, to be held on September 8, 2000, beginning at 12 noon. The Convocation will highlight the Goergen Award winners and be acelebration of excellence in teaching, as well as a welcome to the first-year students. The award winners give brief acceptance speech to the audience after receiving their awards (the acceptance speeches are also printed in the Convocation Program). Since Eberly will be out of town on that day, the department chair will accept the award on Eberly's behalf.
The award to Eberly is the most recent of several university wide teaching awards received by members of the department. In May 2000, Professor Wolf received a University Award for excellence in graduate teaching, and E. Jane Wesley received the Curtis Teaching Award for excellence in teaching by a graduate student. In May of 1999, Professor Orr was the recepient of the Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching by a non-tenured faculty member.
Members of the department who received Goergen Awards in the past include Professor Wolfs (for excellence in undergrduate teaching), Professor Slattery (for curricular development), and Auchincloss, Bodek, Orr and Jones (for the Women in Science and Engineering Program).
