Lynne Orr, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has received the 1999 G. Graydon and Jane W. Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The following are quotes from the citation read at the award ceremony:

Since joining the faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1993, Lynne Orr has distinguished herself as a teacher and a mentor for Rochester students.

She has helped establish undergraduate teaching assistantships to increase the participation of women in the still male-dominated field of physics. An enormous success, the program has won recognition from the University, and has been cited by The Scientist magazine as an exciting innovation in teaching.

Professor Orr also has taken a leading role in creating other opportunities for undergraduates. As a mentor, for example, she has guided students as they conduct research in areas of particle physics that usually are not undertaken until the second year of graduate school. When aspects of that work were accepted for publication, Professor Orr generously listed the undergraduate scholars as co-authors, a rare recognition for non-graduate students.

And, of course, there is her classroom teaching, which earns rave reviews from both undergraduates and graduate students. A typical comment from a student who has taken Professor Orr's Honors Electricity and Magnetism course goes like this: "Enthusiastic instructor, lucid notes, effective homework. An excellent class!"
