U of R's Krishnaswami Receives 1999 APS Apker Award!

Govind Krishnaswami, a first year graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been chosen as a recipient of the 1999 Apker Award of the American Physical Society.

This prestigious award, awarded in a nationwide competition, is meant "to recognize outstanding achievements in physics by undergraduate students, and thereby provide encouragement to young physicists who have demonstrated great potential for future scientific accomplishment." The award was established as a memorial to LeRoy Apker who received this Ph.D. from the UR Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1941.

Krishnaswami's nomination was based on his senior thesis A Model of Interacting Partons for Hadronic Structure Functions, which was done under the supervision of Prof. Sarada G. Rajeev while Krishnaswami was an undergraduate Physics and Mathematics double major at the University of Rochester.

Krishnaswami was announced as one of three finalists (in the category of students from research universities) for the award last July. He was selected to receive the award after presenting a talk on his work, together with the other finalists, at a meeting of the award committee in Washington DC on August 28.

For further details, see the article in the October 11, 1999 issue of UR Currents, or see the announcement on the APS website. For general information about the Apker Award from the APS website, go here.
