Biographical Sketch
Prof. Simon received his B.S. from the City College of NY (1947) and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Rochester (1950). He was a Physicist and then Associate Director of the Neutron Physics Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (1950-61). He joined General Atomic in 1966 and was Head of the Plasma Physics Division (1961-66). He joined the University as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and of Physics in 1966, and was also appointed a Senior Scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics in 1983.
Prof. Simon was a Guggenheim Fellow (1964-65) and has held visiting positions at the Riso Laboratory of the Danish Atomic Energy Commission (1964-65), The Institute of Advanced Study (1974) and at Oxford (1975). He is the author of An Introduction to Thermonuclear Research (Pergamon 1959), past editor of Advances in Plasma Physics (Interscience), and co-author of the Encyclopedia Americana article on Nuclear Fusion (1964-83). He is a past chairman of the Plasma Physics Division of the American Physical Society (1963-64) and is a Fellow of the APS. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer, former Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department, and received the University Mentor Award in 1989.
Research
Prof. Simon's research interests are in the field of Theoretical Plasma Physics, with a focus on its applications to nuclear energy and, in particular, nuclear fusion reactors. He has studied the behavior of plasma in magnetic containers, in laser-produced pellets, and in space. Prof. Simon is a member of the University's interdisciplinary program in High Energy Density Plasma in collaboration with the Laboratory for Laser Energetics.
