The Society of Physics Students is a national organization affiliated with the American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society. It provides a forum for the interaction of undergraduate students interested in physics or astronomy.

The chapter at the University of Rochester sponsors lectures by the faculty on topics of current interest and tours of some of the many academic and industrial research laboratories in the Rochester area. The chapter co-sponsors the annual SPS/Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium by a distinguished visiting scientist. The SPS also offers tutoring services for the introductory physics and astronomy courses. The U of R Chaper has been recognized nationally as an outstanding chapter of the society.

Sigma Pi Sigma is an honor society associated with the SPS. This chapter was established at Rochester in 1994-95. Character and scholastic record are the basis of this society. To be considered for membership, a student must be a declared Physics or Physics and Astronomy major (or minor), have a minimum GPA of 3.3, and have completed at least three semesters of 200 level Physics or Astronomy courses. A condidate's involvement in the Department is also considered important for admission to Sigma Pi Sigma.
