| Introductory Physics sequences |
| The Department offers three introductory basic sequences in physics: |
| PHY 113, 114 -- General Physics I & II; This two-semester calculus-based sequence covers similar material as the three semester sequence PHY 121-123 (see below), but at a lower level. This sequence is intended for majors in natural sciences other than physics, pre-med students, or others desiring a working knowledge of basic physics. |
| PHY 121, 122, 123 -- Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Modern Physics; This is the basic calculus-based sequence for prospective physics, or physics and astronomy, majors and engineering students. |
| PHY 141, 143, 142 -- Mechanics, Modern Physics, Electricity and Magnetism; This is the honors sequence of the above, recommended for students with strong interests and abilities in physics. The Department strongly recommends this sequence for all suitably prepared prospective majors, and encourages it for any student who has had a good high school introduction to differential and integral calculus. Note that PHY 143, Honors Modern Physics, is restricted to freshmen, and preceeds PHY 142 in the normal sequence. |
| Introductory Astronomy Courses for Science Majors |
| The Department offers two introductory courses in astronomy, intended for students with a strong physics and mathematics background. The Department strongly recommends these courses for prospective majors in physics and astronomy. |
| AST 111 -- Elementary Astronomy I; This course is a comprehensive survey of observational astronomy, intended for physical science majors. |
| AST 142 -- Elementary Astrophysics; This course is a comprehensive survey of astrophysics, intended for physical science majors. |
| Courses for Non-Science Majors |
| The Department offers several courses in Physics and in Astronomy designed for students in non-science majors, which require no specific prior knowledge of physics or calculus: |
| PHY 100 -- The Nature of the Physical World; A general survey course discussing the physcial world and the ideas of modern physics, presented with a minimum of mathematical detail. |
| PHY 103 -- Physics of Music; A study of the physical basis of musical phenomena, including acoustics and musical instruments. Intended for any any student with a strong interest in science and music. |
| PHY 105 -- Physics by Inquiry; A course in which students are exposed to the process of scientific investigation through a series of simple "hands on" experiments. |
| PHY 107 -- History of Physics and Music: Students will learn about music, physical and astrophysical and their common history prior to the Renaissance and topics including the cosmos, music of the spheres, and the legendary scholars and thinkers. Guest lectures from the Eastman School of Music, discussions, and demonstrations. |
| AST 102 -- Black Holes, Time Warps and the Large Scale Structure of the Universe; A course presenting a physical and astronomical (but non-mathematical) picture of the workings of Einstein's theory of relativity, and cosmology. |
| AST 104 -- The Solar System; A course dealing with the historical and modern study of our solar system. |
| AST 105 -- Introduction to the Milky Way Galaxy; A general descriptive survey of the structure and contents of the milky way galaxy, presented with a minimum of mathematical detail. |
| AST 171Q & 172Q -- Astronomy by Inquiry I & II; A course in which students make their own astronomical observations with the University's C.E.K. Mees Observatory, and use them as a basis for a quantitative understanding of astrophysical phenomena. |
