PHY 440 20th Century Particle Physics

Credit Hours: 4
Prerequisite: PHY 123, PHY 237 (or instructor permission)

This course is designed for physics majors interested in the development of nuclear and particle physics. The course describes the properties of nuclei and various models useful for the description of nuclear properties. The models and ideas include the liquid drop model, shell model, collective model, radioactivity, fission, and fusion. Properties of particle interactions with matter are covered, and used to develop principles of detections used in nuclear and particle experiments. The physical ideas behind various existing accelerators are discussed. Finally, the fundamental interactions of elementary particles and their constituents are reviewed, with emphasis on issues pertaining to the conservation of quantum numbers and symmetries observed in the high-energy collisions.
